2018 Week 2 Recap: Vegas Conquers Houston

Roughnecks in Rough Shape Again to Start Season

Mallett and Ryan Lead Conquerors to Franchise First Win

February 25, 2018

Houston, TX - If it isn't the offense, it's the defense for Houston Head Coach Mack Brown. The Roughnecks just can't seem to find the solution as they start off the season 0-2 with a devastating loss to an 0-1 expansion team on Saturday night at home.

Roughnecks got off to a nice start as QB Ryan Nassib went down the field and hit WR Danario Alexander for a 13 yard score, but that was the last positive offensive possession for Houston in the first half as Nassib threw two terrible interceptions in the 2nd quarter and a pretty rough Las Vegas team turned those mistakes plus two other drives into four first half Nick Rose Field Goals to be up 12-7 at halftime.

However, after Vegas QB Ryan Mallett threw his first touchdown pass of the game to WR Brandon Coleman on a 24 post route the momentum seemed to shift despite the Conquerors on top 19-7. The Roughnecks bounced back with a nice 30 yard touchdown pass from Nassib to WR Greg Little and then a surprised onside kick recovery yielded another quick score and a 21-19 lead. But, that's when the run defense fell apart and the Conquerors leaned on the combo of RB Terrance West and Zach Zenner for eight four quarter rushing yards and two touchdowns for the 33-21 win.
