2018 Week 9 Recap: Kaepernick Knocks off Undefeated Guardians

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

Fleet Led by Kaepernick Look For Real

Kaepernick Defeats Josh Freeman and New York in Huge Test

April 15, 2018

San Diego, CA - This was the game everyone wanted to see as the undefeated Guardians headed to San Diego to play the one loss Fleet. The game was sold out and there was talk of the $30 tickets going for as much as $200 on the secondary market leading up to this one.

The game itself did not disappoint, as both teams demonstrated solid defense and just enough offense to keep fans on the edge of their seats. The task for the New York defense was to contain QB Colin Kaepernick and, well, it was a nice idea. They were able to bottle him up for most of the first quarter, but after getting burnt with some well-timed play-action, the Guardians were forced to downplay the run, and that gave RB Kapri Bibbs all he needed. He would end the day with 114 yards on 25 carries, and while the Guardians were able to keep the prolific back out of the end zone, his drive-sustaining runs got San Diego more than enough room to operate.

The game was tied at 7 at the half, thanks to a Kaepernick to WR Charles Johnson TD and an equalizer from Guardian QB Josh Freeman to WR Hakeem Nicks. In the second half, Bibbs helped San Diego escape from a 1st and 10 at their own 2 yard line and drive 98 yards for an eventual TD from his understudy, RB Bishop Sankey.

It took two drives for New York to get back to a tie score, as their own leading rusher, RB Orleans Darkwa took a pitch on a 2nd and Goal from the 6 and evaded LB Spencer Paysinger to reach the corner of the end zone as the 3rd quarter ended.

The play of the game came midway through the 4th quarter as Fleet LB Shea McClellin punched the ball out of Darkwa’s hand, giving the Fleet the ball at the 35. Five plays later, Kaepernick found WR Braxton Miller on a fade route and the rookie pulled the ball in over the outstretched arms of New York CB Tommie Campbell for the winning score.
