Mike Martz will be the Head Coach of the new San Diego Alliance Franchise
Martz No Joke on April Fools Day for the Alliance League
April 1, 2017
San Diego, CA - Charlie Ebersol announced to a crowd of about 500 onlookers that the league had received between ten and twelve excellent expansion bids, and today he was proud to announce the second accepted bid for a 2018 expansion team. Paul Pelosi along with Pelosi Football LLC are proud to announce the San Diego Fleet.
Pelosi, the husband of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, owns and operates Financial Leasing Services Inc, a San Francisco based real estate and venture capital investment agency. He was also the owner of Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League (UFL) from 2009 to 2012 and the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League (USFL) from 1982 to 1985.
Pelosi, then announced that his San Diego Fleet would be coached by Mike Martz,
“I'm so happy that we we're able to land this man. It was important for me to get this deal done before St. Louis did as I just know Martz was their number one option also. Martz has won on the biggest stage and is absolutely perfect for this job.”
Pelosi may have given away an Alliance secret that St. Louis would also be receiving an expansion franchise which would make as much sense as San Diego getting one with the St. Louis Rams leaving for Los Angeles just like the San Diego Chargers were. And with the rumors circling a few months back that former NFL star Michael Vick, was looking for an investment group to bring an Alliance franchise to Atlanta, we may know the four expansion teams sooner than the AAF had anticipated. The league plans to announce the other two expansion teams in August.
Pelosi purchased the San Diego Fleet for $15M, the same price Mark Cuban paid for the Dallas Renegades earlier this year. Which is $2.5M more than what the new owners paid for the already existing teams last week.
Mike Martz, the former St. Louis Rams Head Coach from 2000-2005 and Offensive Coordinator in 1999, last coached as the Offensive Coordinator for the Chicago Bears in 2010 and 2011. He was also the Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator in 2006 and 2007, and the San Francisco 49ers' Offensive Coordinator in 2008. Martz has been coaching at the collegiate or professional level since 1973.
