Mike Shanahan Brings More Professional Coaching Experience and Winning to the AAF

Mike Shanahan and Brady Quinn Join the Alliance

April 14, 2015

San Antonio, TX - Charlie Ebersol and Legendary Field Exhibitions LLC are proud to announce the San Antonio Commanders and their first Head Coach Mike Shanahan along with their first starting Quarterback, Brady Quinn.

“Mike is a three time Super Bowl Champion winning Head Coach. He has almost 40 years of coaching under his belt, and has developed young coaches and Quarterbacks every where he has gone. He is the perfect fit for San Antonio.”

San Antonio is the ideal city selection for Charlie Ebersol and Legendary Field Exhibitions LLC. Ebersol has stated that he wanted to select small cities without a current professional football franchise who has demonstrated success in previous football leagues.

Mike Shanahan

Mike was fired as the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins in 2013 after the team stumbled to a 3-13 finish. Mike has been the Head Coach of the Los Angeles Raiders, Denver Broncos and Redskins. He is known for developing Quarterbacks such as Steve Young, John Elway, Jake Plummer and Robert Griffin III. Mike is the father of current Atlanta Falcons' Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Mike has also served as the President of Football Operations for the Broncos and the Redskins.

Building from the ground up with this franchise, and developing talented young men has always been my favorite tasks outside of raising my children. I look forward to helping this new league grow.”

Brady Quinn

Quinn is the first player to sign an AAF contract. He enjoyed a great collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame before being the first round selection of the Cleveland Browns. Quinn has played for seven different NFL franchises including a two year stint under Shanahan with the Denver Broncos.

San Antonio Commanders

Joining Shanahan in San Antonio will be Karl Dorrell as the Offensive Coordinator and Charlie Jackson as the Defensive Coordinator. Dorrell coached Wide Receivers under Shanahan in Denver before becoming the University of California-Los Angles(UCLA) Head Coach in 2003. Dorrell was currently serving as the New York Jets' Wide Receiver Coach. Jackson coached under Shanahan with the Broncos from 2007-2009. Jackson most recently was serving as the Defensive Coordinator at the University of Colorado in 2012.

Plenty of experience will also be joining Shanahan's staff as assistants. Mike Sherman will serve as the Offensive Line Coach and Assistant Head Coach. Sherman has served as the Green Bay Packers and as Texas A&M's Head Coach. He was most recently the Offensive Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2012-2013. Dan Hawkins will coach the Quarterbacks for the Commanders. Hawkins has been the Head Coach for the Boise State Broncos and the Colorado Buffalos at the collegiate level, and the Montreal Allouettes of the Canadian Football League. He was most recently the Head Coach of the United States national team. Former Bronco Ed McCaffrey will also be joining the staff as the Wide Receivers Coach.

Daryl Johnston will serve as the General Manager of the Commanders. Johnston was a two time NFL pro-bowler and three time Super Bowl Champion with the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s. This will be his first job as an executive.

The Commanders will be playing their home games at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
