Herm Edwards Returns to the Big Apple
May 5, 2015
New York, NY - Vince McMahon and Alpha Entertainment LLC are proud to announce Herm Edwards as the Head Coach of the league's biggest market, and the New York Guardians.
“It takes a unique individual to handle the criticism and demands of New York City, and with Herm, Al and Kevin Gilbride we have three of those individuals. These men have spent plenty of years here and look forward to do it all again.”
New York was a no brainer city selection for Vince McMahon and Alpha Entertainment LLC. The TV market should help the league land a television network deal.
Herm Edwards
Like Tony Dungy and Mike Shanahan before him, the AAF has brought Edwards back to the coaching ranks. Edwards last coached in 2008 as the Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Herm served as a Head Coach in the NFL from 2001 to 2008 for both the New York Jets and the Chiefs. Edwards also played in the NFL for fifteen seasons.
“You play to win the game, and there is no better place to win the game than New York City.”
New York Guardians
Joining Edwards in New York is the previous mentioned Kevin Gilbride as the Offensive Coordinator and Al Groh as the Defensive Coordinator. Gilbride coached the New York Giants as the Quarterbacks Coach and Offensive Coordinator from 2004 until 2013. He also served as the Head Coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1997, and as the Offensive Coordinator for six other NFL franchises during his career. Groh most recently served as the Defensive Coordinator for Georgia Tech from 2010-2012. He was also the Head Coach of the New York Jets in 2000 and for the University of Virginia from 2001 to 2009.
Carl Peterson will serve as the General Manager for the New York Guardians. Peterson was the General Manager for the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars of the USFL from 1982-1985 and then the Kansas City Chiefs from 1989 to 2008.
Former New York Giant Antonio Pierce and Jet LaMont Jordan will be coaching the Linebackers and Running Backs respectively.
The Guardians will be playing their home games at MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey.
