Memphis Express sign QB Johnny Manziel
Frederick Smith Wanted a New Quarterback
March 12, 2016
Memphis, TN - Express Owner Frederick Smith was done with the Dennis Dixon era after an 0-4 start, and an 0-4 TD-Interception ratio on Saturday. Yesterday, on March 11th, the Cleveland Browns released QB Johnny Manziel, and presented a possible solution at Quarterback for Smith along with Head Coach Greg Schiano.
“Greg and I sat down and discussed the possibility of adding Manziel yesterday afternoon and we came to the conclusion that he was going to be signed by someone in this league. Would we rather have him available to us, or have to play against him? He could be a long term fix at Quarterback in this league.”
In order to make room on the active roster with the designated "franchise player" for Manziel, the Express cut ties with starting QB Dennis Dixon. Manziel will be making $500k in 2016 and $1M in 2017. Dixon denied the possibility of signing with the Austin Generals, rather choosing to become a free agent. McLeod Bethel-Thompson will start at QB for the Express on Saturday, while Manziel will serve in a reserve role.
