2016 Week 8 Recap: Iron Flattened at Home

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

Iron are undefeated no more as they drop last game of season to Memphis

Johnny Manziel Looks like Johnny Football in Alabama

April 3, 2016

Birmingham, AL - The Express may have found something these last two weeks of the season, their Quarterback. Johnny Manziel looked like his old college self against the league's best team in the Iron. The Iron defense had been rock solid all season long, but the defensive backs couldn't cover the Express receivers on Saturday. Manziel threw for a league record 372 yards and 4 TDs in just his second game as the Express starter.

Express K Tom Obarski hit the game winner from just 29 yards out in Overtime for the upset. But don't let the Field Goal fool you, this game was a shoot out the whole way. The Express were up 10-7 after one, and 25-21 at the half. But the third belonged to the Iron, and heading into the final quarter, Birmingham sat on a 31-25 lead. However, Manziel took the opening drive of the 4th and finished it with a one yard touchdown pass to TE Demetrius Harris. Trent Richardson responded with 44 yards on the ground, and a drive that took eight minutes off the clock, before being finished off with a two yard plunge. After the two point conversion gave the Iron a 39-32 lead, Manziel had just 1:58 to work. He used every second of it, as he hit Jon Baldwin for the 26 yard tying touchdown that put the game into OT.
