Mack Brown and Vince Young Re-Unite in AAF
May 12, 2015
Houston, TX - Vince McMahon and Alpha Entertainment LLC are proud to announce the Houston Roughnecks and their first Head Coach Mack Brown along with their first starting Quarterback, Vince Young.
“The things that Mack Brown and Vince Young accomplished together in Austin were truly unbelievable. We hope they can create that magic all over again in Houston.”
Mack Brown
Mack resigned from the University of Texas in December of 2013 after leading the university to the 2006 national championship with the help of Vince Young. Mack also coached at the University of Appalachian State, Tulane and North Carolina as the Head Coach before arriving in Austin.
“Vince is the greatest player I ever got to coach and it's an absolute privilege to get that honor for a second time. He's mature. He's hungry. He wants redemption. This is going to be fun.”
Vince Young
Vince Young is the second player to sign an AAF contract. Vince was so good at Texas that he led the team to the 2006 national championship, won the Heisman trophy, and went on to be the #3 pick in the NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. In the five seasons with the Titans, he was a two time Pro Bowler, the Comeback Player of the Year in 2009 and the Rookie of the Year in 2007. However, Vince Young was released from the team in 2011 due to injury. Vince would sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills as a backup Quarterback in the years following.
Houston Roughnecks
Joining Brown in Houston will be Tim Brewster as the Offensive Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach and Greg Robinson as the Defensive Coordinator. Brewster, the former University of Minnesota Head Coach, coached under Mack with the North Carolina Tar Heels from 1989 to 1997. Brewster has been the Florida State Seminoles Tight Ends Coach since 2013. Robinson served as the Defensive Coordinator under Mack Brown at the University of Texas before becoming the Head Coach at Syracuse and then later the Defensive Coordinator for the University of Michigan, the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. Robinson was the Defensive Coordinator at San Jose State prior to accepting this position.
Brown's assistant coaches range in experience. Sparky Woods will serve as an Assistant Head Coach and Running Backs Coach, while former Houston Oiler Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews will serve as the Offensive Line Coach and former Longhorn and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Chris Simms will coach the Quarterbacks. Woods most recently was the Head Coach at the Vermont Military Institute (VMI). Matthews spent a season as the Offensive Line Coach for the Houston Texans and three seasons in the same position with the Tennessee Titans. Simms was an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots in 2013.
Ray Farmer will serve as the General Manager of the Roughnecks. Farmer served as the GM of the Cleveland Browns from 2013 to 2015.
The Roughnecks will be playing their home games at TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas.
