2019 Week 11 Recap: Iron Hammer Out Guardians

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

Eastern Conference Comes down to Iron vs Guardians

Iron Overcome Old Rival Guardians in Late Season Clash

April 28, 2019

Birmingham, AL - This was a very low-scoring affair early on. The score at halftime was 6-3; neither team could get much going. The weather was playing a role; there were some embarrassing drops including a muffed punt return that probably wouldn’t have happened in more ideal conditions. The second half then happened, and the offenses finally warmed up more. Both teams traded scores, making it 14-11. Then the Iron grabbed one more touchdown, and the Guardians never responded.

For the Iron, QB Tahj Boyd would certainly be a standout as he helped lead the team to a win by going 22-for-32 with 244 yards and one touchdown pass. However, WR L'Damien Washington had arguably the biggest day as he pulled in nine catches for 105 yards. He’s been doing quite well in the AAF and may get another shot in the NFL as a result.

There weren’t a lot of big standouts for the Guardians. QB Josh Freeman who went 16-for-22 and 161 yards, didn’t play badly but wasn’t particularly remarkable either. RB Orleans Darkwa had a decent day on the ground, getting 71 yards on 17 carries and got in the end zone for the lone Guardians touchdown as well.

The Iron defense once again did play a good role in helping their team get the win. The Guardians defense did a decent job at holding the Iron down for the first half, although they gave way in the second half.

Hurts Drafted in NFL's 3rd Round

April 29, 2019

New York, NY - Houston Roughnecks' rookie QB Jalen Hurts was drafted in the third round on the National Football League's Rookie Draft, 87th overall, by the Philadelphia Eagles. Hurts is projected to make $2.8M over his first three seasons with the Eagles.

Before leaving the University of Alabama for the AAF, Hurts was projected to be a 7th round draft selection after losing his starting to position to Tua Tagovailoa. Hurts is not expected to sign with the Eagles until his AAF season has concluded.

“I owe my current position to Coach (Mack) Brown, Coach (Major) Applewhite, Mr. (Vince) McMahon, Mr. (Charlie) Ebersol and owner Mr. (Jim) Crane. Without them taking a chance on me, I'm not sure where I'd be right now. Of course. I'm going to finish out my goal with my teammates and I hope I show younger guys that they're not stuck in their situations in college.”
