2021 Week 5 Recap: Lawrence Bounces Back

Updated: Apr 9, 2021

Orlando Apollos Undefeated No More

Lawrence Has Never Lost Twice in a Row

March 14, 2021

Birmingham, AL - Iron QB Trevor Lawrence threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns as the Birmingham rallied from 18-points down in the first half to defeat the Orlando Apollos 34-28 on Saturday.

Iron RB Trent Richardson's TD put the Iron ahead for good. Iron was missing several key players. Starting LBs Larry Dean and Mark Barron were missing because of injuries. The Apollos took advantage, putting Birmingham in a 28-10 hole in the second quarter with the virus-reduced crowd stunned to near silence.

That's when Lawrence showed why he the projected number one overall prospect coveted by every NFL team. QB Lawrence threw a 30-yard TD to WR L'Damian Washington on Birmingham's opening third-quarter drive to begin the comeback, then threw an 8-yard scoring strike to WR Robert Foster that drew the Iron within 28-26. That's when RB Richardson put the Iron in front for good with a 17-yard touchdown run with 11:34 to go.

The Apollos got the ball back with 1:24 to, but QB Garrett Gilbert was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for an Iron' safety, a fitting end to a second-half shutout by the Birmingham defense.
