Updated: May 7, 2021

Apollos vs Roughnecks Provides the Fireworks the Alliance Needed

Apollos and Roughnecks Put on Offensive Show

May 23, 2021

Mexico City, Mexico - The two teams wasted absolutely no time getting after it offensively on Sunday. QB Garrett Gilbert and the Orlando Apollos won the toss, took the ball and wasted very little time in going to the air. QB Gilbert finalized the opening drive with a 9 yard TD pass to WR Donte Moncrief but missed the extra point setting the score at 6-0.

QB PJ Walker quickly returned the favor as he led his team down near the red zone before RB D'Onta Foreman scored from 22 yards out. After a quick three and out, on three straight incompletions, QB Walker got the ball back and went right back to work. QB Walker hit WR Jaelen Strong across the middle for fifteen yards before going over the top to WR DaMarkus Lodge for 29 yards down the sideline to make the game 14-6.

QB Gilbert found his accuracy on his third drive of the game as he went 6/6 for 67 yards on the drive before having RB Akeem Hunt find the end zone from three yards out. Orlando K Younghoe Koo then missed another extra point to leave the score at 14-12 QB Walker wasn't done with the first quarter as he found WR Cam Phillips for a 20 yard score to make the score 21-12 at the end of the first.

After a 33 yards Field Goal from K Koo, QB Walker kept the offensive onslaught going when he found WR Sammie Coates on a 12 yard slant score. QB Gilbert then hit WR Charles Johnson for a 27 yard post to bring the score to 28-22. The defenses then finally settled into the game. Both teams would stay off the scoreboard for the rest of the 2nd quarter.

The third quarter saw the pace slow down drastically on the offensive side of the ball where both teams landed two Field Goals a piece making the score 34-28 going into the final stanza.

Finally, in the fourth quarter, one of the offenses made a mistake. QB Walker looking for WR Sammie Coates down the sideline on 3rd and 12 had his pass intercepted by Orlando DB Jalen Collins on a jump ball. Seizing the momentum and with the Houston defense being warn down, the Apollos turned to their run game. RBs Hunt and Antonio Andrew combined for 43 yards on the last drive on ten carries, that set up K Koo for the game winning 45 yard Field Goal.
